While their teammates hand koala bear plush toys to their opponents, Rory Ellis, left and Dean Neville can't hide their disappointment after their team, the Waverly Falcons, hailing from a suburb of Melbourne, Australia, could not pull out a victory against Lovejoy High School on Tuesday night at the Rushville-Industry Boys Varsity Basketball Christmas Tournament Tuesday night in Rushville, losing 79-66. The Falcons are in the midst of a 21-day trip across America playing basketball in places such as Indianpolis, Central Illinois and Los Angeles.

ERIC SUMBERG/JOURNAL STAR The Uniroyal Gal, a fixture at the 1800 SW block of Washington Street in Peoria for nearly four decades, has seen attire changes from flashy to modest over the nearly four decades she has stood near the Cedar Street Bridge. In 2005, an elderly motorist was struck as she was driving and her car careened into the base of the Uniroyal Gal, breaking her toes and right ankle and damaging her high-heeled left foot. Today, she stands tall, a beacon for those who desire tires throughout Central Illinois.

Trees for Charity

The non-profit organization hopes to raise around $85,000 this year for nine local charities through the sale of the trees and wreaths, a cookies with Santa event, a cocktail hour and a gala.
